Want to reduce noise pollution in your garden?
The response/advice below has been written to help you resolve the noise issue and is based on our expertise and customer experiences. We do not offer further support on this matter and cannot guarantee the outcome. Therefore, application is at your own risk. In the Netherlands, many gardens are separated by a fence. However, this fence does not completely isolate noise from neighbours. As a result, parties, barbecues, and playing children can cause disturbances when you want to have a quiet conversation or read a book.
Causes
As long as the gaps in the fence are sufficiently closed, the noise disturbances mainly depend on the following factors:
- The height of the fence; the taller the fence, the harder it is for sound to flank
- The distance from the sound source to the receiver relative to the fence; the closer you are to the screen, the more protection the fence provides
Improve existing fence
Unfortunately, it is impossible to completely eliminate noise nuisance. At best, the disturbance can be minimised. We recommend the following (in this order):
- Ensure that the fence is properly sealed; any gaps should be filled in well. If you still feel that sound is coming through the fence, you can strengthen it, but this is usually not necessary.
- Take a position close to the fence.
- When there is little or no vegetation in front of the fence, you can partially equip it with EASYwhisper. This is suitable for outdoor use. EASYwhisper is particularly useful when your fence stands parallel to another hard surface (for example, a shed or house). Flanking sound reflects off this surface. It is more effective to apply absorption on the reflecting surface, but this is often not aesthetically desirable. When the source is located close to the back of the fence, absorption on the source side is the most effective; especially the area around the source. When the source is located far from the fence, absorption on the source side is pointless. The same applies to the receiver's side.
New fence
You may also choose to replace the fence. We recommend a privacy wall similar to those used in industrial environments. However, because these screens need to be storm and winter proof, this can be a costly affair. More information about this is available upon request.
